Placenta previa is a condition in which the placenta lies very low in the uterus and covers all or part of the cervix. The cervix is the opening to the uterus that sits at the top of the vagina. Placenta previa happens in about 1 in 200 pregnancies.
It is a dire condition that must be diagnosed early and a C-section scheduled. It is never safe to vaginally deliver with this condition. If a mother experiences bleeding, spotting or discomfort, she must immediately notify her physician. The risk to the baby dying or suffering brain damage, increases as the pregnancy advances.
I am aware of a young mother that at 28 weeks began spotting and having cramps. She was admitted to the hospital and a C-section was scheduled. For whatever reason, the physician decided to allow her to deliver vaginally. The baby’s neck was severed as the physician attempted to pull the infant from the vaginal canal. Since this was not a “live” birth there was no death certificate and no cause of death. The mother was told the baby was stillborn.
This was a tragic event that resulted from negligence. This mother would never have known how her baby died if she had not hired a lawyer.
